Many people have loved ones who depend on them for their health and well-being. Often these loved ones have feathers or four legs or scaly skin. Pets have become family members to many people. Because of this deep affection, pet owners find themselves paying for expensive medical care on behalf of their beloved animal. Veterinary services are not cheap, especially for emergency or intense treatment. Due to the costs of vet bills, people are looking into insurance for their pets.

Isn’t pet insurance a new thing?

Pet insurance is not as new as it may seem. There is one company in the United States which has been insuring pets for over twenty years. Another company, originally based out of England, has been around for over thirty. Obviously, people have been seeking to insure their pets for quite a while now. Of course, the concept has gained attention in recent years.

How does it work?

While there are HMO (Health Membership Organization) plans for pets, these are not actual insurance plans. The companies offering pet insurance plans work like their counterparts for humans. A pet insurance plan has a monthly premium the pet owner must pay to keep the plan current. There is usually a deductible and a co-pay. Usually, the owner will have to pay up to 20% of the bill out of pocket while the insurance company covers the remainder. However, there may be coverage limits.

So what is HMO?

Health Membership Organization plans for pet are similar to the medical discount plans for humans. The HMO plan may offer vaccination discounts. It may also provide discounts for spaying/neutering and dental cleanings. Sometimes the basic check-ups for the pet is including.

What to look for in pet insurance

There are guidelines to help a pet owner in the new world of pet insurance. First, a pet owner needs to find out what company insures their type of pet. Only one insurance company in the United States insures exotics such as boa constrictors and ferrets. Next, the owner should find out if the company is licensed in the state where the owner resides. Speaking with an agent of the insurance company which insures the owner’s type of pet and is licensed in the pet’s home state is always a wise choice.

Ask questions

When a pet owner seeks insurance for a furry (or scaly) friend, the owner should not hesitate to ask questions. It is a good idea to find out what different plans are available. An owner needs to know if the policy only includes accidental injuries or also basic health procedures. In the higher monthly premium bracket (averaging around 80 dollars a month), the owner can find procedures necessary to treat illnesses like cancer covered by the plan.

Like medical care for humans, pets often require expensive treatments and procedures. An insurance plan for the beloved family pet can help offset the costs of such treatments. It can also allow for a pet to receive expensive treatment instead of being euthanized for financial reasons. An owner should speak with an agent before purchasing a plan to make sure the plan is best suited to the needs of both the owner and the pet.
